The University of Missouri System was awarded a $465,916 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to conduct collaborative research focused on the computationally driven discovery and synthesis of 2D materials through selective etching. The project aims to advance a new process for the synthesis of 2D materials and accelerate their discovery by combining computational, experimental, and machine-learning techniques in a closed-loop paradigm. The research team, consisting of chemists, physicists, and materials scientists, will initially focus on 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) to design a computational discovery methodology, perform experimental validation, and optimize predictive models. This research is expected to establish the fundamental knowledge required to develop a selective electrochemical removal process for synthesizing novel 2D materials. The project also includes high school outreach programs and interdisciplinary training of the next-generation workforce. The grant was awarded on October 1, 2023, with a planned ultimate completion date of September 30, 2027.
