The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems awarded a $200,000 Project Grant under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) to develop a fiber optic multiparameter sensor (FOMS) capable of long-term, under-ice monitoring of critical climate components in lakes. The goal is to simultaneously measure parameters like carbon dioxide, methane, temperature, pH, salinity, and dissolved oxygen to improve understanding of greenhouse gas cycling and lake ecosystem health. The project will also develop a novel machine learning-based sensor calibration model to enable high-fidelity "fingerprint" sensing. The sensor will be deployed on stationary moorings and mobile underwater platforms to collect 4-dimensional data that will be used to inform measurement optimization and modeling frameworks. No subawards are planned under this 3-year award, which commenced on September 1, 2023.
