Montclair State University was awarded a $350,000 Project Grant by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) program. This 3-year grant will fund the "Designing an Equitable Approach to Multiplicative Reasoning through Dynamic Measurement for Area (DYME-A)" project.
The key goals of this project are to: (1) investigate how students' reasoning about dynamic area measurement can support their development of multiplicative reasoning; (2) design a more inclusive DYME-A intervention to reach a diverse student population; and (3) explore how design experiment methodologies can be informed by equity research to engineer more equitable educational designs and theories. The project aims to expand the existing DYME-A approach, which engages students in exploring models of area as a dynamic sweep of a line segment, to multiplication of whole numbers in 4th grade. No subawards are planned under this grant.
