The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities awarded Susquehanna University a $200,170 Project Grant under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) to acquire a single-crystal X-ray diffractometer. This instrument will support primarily undergraduate research in the greater Susquehanna Valley region, including efforts at Susquehanna University, Bucknell University, Lycoming College, Elizabethtown College, and Wilkes University. The diffractometer, which has a sealed-tube copper X-ray source, charge-integrated pixel array detector, and liquid-nitrogen-fueled low-temperature cooling device, will enable accurate 3D structural characterization of small molecules, covalent organic frameworks, nanomaterials, and supramolecular structures. The funded research aims to advance fundamental understanding of synthetic pathways, develop new therapeutic platforms and imaging agents, and explore the relationship between molecular design and resulting electronic/structural properties, with applications in materials science, catalysis, and medicine. No sub-awards are planned under this grant, which has a project period from Sep 1, 2023 to Aug 31, 2026.
