The National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) awarded a $432,400 Project Grant to Regents Of The University Of Michigan - University Of Michigan-Dearborn to establish a new experimental facility featuring an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) system. The ARC will enable multidisciplinary research, education, and outreach activities focused on thermal management of automotive batteries. This new capability will support the transition to electric vehicles by advancing knowledge and workforce development in areas like battery degradation, safety, material testing, and power electronics. The project will engage over 20 faculty across the University of Michigan-Dearborn and neighboring institutions, fostering research collaborations with industry partners like Ford, GM, and Stellantis. The ARC system will also facilitate outreach to promote STEM interest among K-12 students in the Detroit area.
