The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $586,313 Project Grant to Rutgers, The State University located in Piscataway, New Jersey. The grant supports a collaborative research project titled "Collaborative Research: Oligohaline Dispersion: Transport Processes at the Estuary-Tidal River Transition" under the NSF Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). This project aims to quantify tidal dispersion and identify the underlying mechanisms driving transport processes in the oligohaline (brackish) region at the upper reach of the Delaware River Estuary. The research will combine in-situ and shipboard observations, dye release studies, and high-resolution modeling to analyze how bathymetric features and anthropogenic modifications impact salinity distribution and water supply management. A graduate student at Rutgers will be involved in all aspects of the study, including observations, modeling, and outreach. The grant period of performance runs from September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026.
