The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $199,098 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program to the University of Cincinnati. This grant supports the development of a novel theoretical and computational toolkit for analyzing, designing, controlling, and optimizing dynamic systems that exhibit irregular behaviors, with a focus on modern wind turbine power systems. The key goals are to: 1) develop a dynamic sensitivity theory for nonsmooth/discontinuous ordinary differential equation and differential-algebraic equation systems, extending existing smooth sensitivity-based methods; 2) advance control theory and methods for a wide class of nonsmooth/discontinuous systems; and 3) apply the developed theory and tools to improve analysis and control capabilities for wind turbine power systems, with the aim of minimizing the negative consequences from extreme events while maintaining normal system performance. This multidisciplinary research project will also train graduate and undergraduate students, including those from underrepresented populations, in STEM fields. The award period is from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2027.
