The University of Maine System (UMS), through its University of Maine Division, is conducting a $102,232 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program. The project aims to develop novel theoretical and computational tools for analyzing, designing, and controlling dynamic systems that exhibit irregular behavior, such as modern wind turbine power systems. The research seeks to minimize the negative consequences and maintain system objectives during extreme events, while also maximizing power generation under normal operating conditions. This multidisciplinary effort will advance fundamental knowledge in nonsmooth dynamic systems, sensitivity analysis, and control theory, with applications to improving the resilience of wind turbine power systems. The project will also support the training of graduate and undergraduate students, including those from underrepresented populations, in STEM fields. The award period runs from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2027.
