The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded the University of Alaska Anchorage a $1,549,999 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research on the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) in remote Arctic communities. The key objectives are to: 1) Evaluate the performance of commercially available EVs in extreme cold climates below -30 degrees Celsius, including off-road EVs, through data collection, modeling, and analysis; 2) Assess community receptiveness and barriers to EV adoption in two rural Alaskan communities by applying the Transportation Acceptance Model; 3) Research the impacts of EV charging on isolated Arctic diesel microgrids and the effects of policy choices; and 4) Develop and deliver workforce development curricula for EV maintenance and repair tailored to rural Alaska. The award period is from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2028. This interdisciplinary project will bring together researchers, tribal partners, electric utilities, and vocational programs to address how EVs can improve resilience, provide cleaner mobility, and promote energy justice in remote Arctic regions.
