The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities awarded a $124,802 Project Grant to the University of Oklahoma (OU) to study the growth of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals at the single-particle level. This research aims to advance the development of low-cost single photon emitters (SPEs) necessary for building future quantum photonic networks that enable secure quantum communications. Under this 2-year grant, starting September 1, 2023, Professor Yitong Dong and his students at OU will create a nano-sized liquid/liquid interface confined to a nanopipette tip to regulate the diffusion and delivery of crystal precursors. This will allow them to tune the nanocrystal nucleation and growth kinetics, and use advanced optical characterization techniques to monitor the photoluminescence and photon correlation properties of the nanocrystals during growth. The findings are expected to significantly improve the fundamental understanding of colloidal perovskite nanocrystal growth mechanisms. The project will also provide research experiences for undergraduate students and engage them through outreach programs.
