This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.076 - STEM Education) will support Brandeis University in designing, developing, and testing a sequence of lessons for high school youth in East Tennessee. The project will teach artificial intelligence concepts by using images from planetary exploration and emerging generative AI tools to create visually appealing generative artworks and digital stories. Over the 3-year project, it will directly impact approximately 360 high school students and reach a larger audience through online activities. The $305,515 award aims to investigate how this interdisciplinary program influences students' AI knowledge, STEM engagement and identity, and sense of belonging to a scientific community. The project will also train educators on the learning materials generated. This award reflects NSF's mission to support research and practice that considers informal STEM learning's role in equity, promotes personal and educational success, and fosters interest in STEM careers.
