The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure awarded a $599,276 Project Grant under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CFDA 47.070) program to The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York, doing business as Sponsored Projects Services, from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2026.
The grant supports the development of novel application-layer models, algorithms, and tools to enable energy-efficient and high-performance data transfers at high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud data centers. Key focus areas include: 1) predicting and tuning optimal cross-layer transfer parameter combinations; 2) applying deep reinforcement learning to adapt to dynamic network and system conditions; 3) accurately estimating network device power consumption and adjusting transfer rates; and 4) providing energy-efficient data transfer algorithms for HPC administrators and cloud service providers. The project aims to reduce the carbon footprint of data movement while maintaining performance, with potential to save gigawatt hours of energy and millions of dollars in the U.S. economy. The developed models, algorithms, and software are planned to benefit researchers, educators, and students across K-12, undergraduate, and graduate levels.
