The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $500,000 Project Grant under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to the University of South Carolina (USC) to support the Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center (PGSC) from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2026. The PGSC maintains and distributes genetically diverse deer mice (genus Peromyscus) to researchers worldwide, including academic institutions and federal agencies, for studies in ecology, evolution, genetics, physiology, public health, and infectious diseases. The funding will assist in the uninterrupted operation of the PGSC, which maintains six closed colonies of five Peromyscus species and provides pedigreed animals, including from reference wild populations, as well as contract research services such as DNA sampling and histologic analyses upon request. The PGSC also serves as a focal point for disseminating information and providing training to the Peromyscus research community.
