This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Astronomical Sciences provides $109,853 to Bucknell University under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) from March 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024. The funding supports a collaborative research effort between Bucknell University and Vassar College to study magnetic fields of planets beyond our solar system through observational and theoretical investigations of magnetic star-planet interactions around low-mass stars. Specifically, the researchers will search for and measure radio wave emissions produced through these interactions using ground-based telescopes. They will also develop computer models to explain observed radio brightnesses based on stellar and planetary magnetic properties. The award furthers NSF's mission to advance scientific knowledge and understanding while training future astronomers and engaging undergraduate students in scientific careers through shared research outcomes.
