Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) received a $420,000 three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems through the Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.041). The grant will fund research to develop a novel spin torque oscillator maser device enabled by spin-microwave photon coupling. The device aims to generate coherent microwave signals with superior performance compared to existing technologies. If successful, the new approach of placing a spin torque oscillator into a microwave resonator could lead to macroscopic phase coherence in magnetic materials with large areas. The research is also expected to enrich understanding of spin dynamics and coupling between magnets and microwave physics. The grant period is from September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026.
