Project Grant 2309081
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences provides $194,914 to Florida Gulf Coast University to study the effects of Hurricane Ian on the West Florida Shelf. The funding supports a collaborative research project examining how dissolved organic matter and nutrients delivered during Hurricane Ian in September 2022 influence water chemistry and ecological processes on the shelf. Specifically, the award will enable investigation of how bacteria and...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences Project Grant award of $262,393 to Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) from July 15, 2023 to June 30, 2026 will support research to extend the hurricane record along the Southwest Florida coast by thousands of years. The project will analyze sediment cores from coastal "blue holes" to reconstruct the history of tropical cyclones in the region, resulting in a more robust understanding of the tropical cyclone frequency...
- This $585,115 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support a collaborative research project to develop multi-century records of the Florida Current and its sources. The award will enable researchers at the American Museum of Natural History to utilize previously collected coral samples to reconstruct annual changes in the Florida Current over the past 200-300 years. This work aims to better understand the natural variability and...
- This $358,499 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), will fund research to understand the impact of warming on the structure and function of marine communities in the Northwest Atlantic Shelf region, including the Gulf of Maine and Mid-Atlantic Bight. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, through its Office of Sponsored Research, will characterize the composition and features of plankton and fish...
- This $134,207 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will fund collaborative research to transform the scientific community's understanding and forecasting of coastline changes in response to shifting storm climates and sea-level rise. The project will develop new techniques to downscale global climate model outputs to produce detailed forecasts of the winds, waves, and water levels affecting specific coastlines, such as the Carolina...
- This $200,000 federal Project Grant was awarded on September 1, 2024 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The grant supports research to assess the impact of hurricane-induced sewage overflows on the release of microplastics into surrounding waters. The primary awardee, Florida State University, will collect water samples from a watershed affected by Hurricane Debby in 2024 and compare them to non-impacted systems. State-of-the-art FTIR techniques...
- This $552,775 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research to investigate benthic iron fluxes in the Labrador Sea, an important region of deep-water formation. The project aims to identify and quantify iron sources from ocean sediments to the overlying surface waters, which can influence the biological carbon pump in this high-latitude region. The research team from Florida State University will collect sediment and pore water...
- Mote Marine Laboratory, Inc. was awarded a $433,268 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct the REU SITE: Mote Marine Laboratory Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Estuarine and Coastal Sciences. The grant provides funding from April 15, 2021 through March 31, 2024 to support hands-on research experiences for undergraduate students in estuarine and coastal sciences at Mote Marine...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences (CFDA 47.074) Federal Grant Program provides $170,598 to the University of Miami to assess the impacts of Hurricane Milton on the function and diversity of soil microbial communities in Florida. The research combines pre- and post-hurricane field surveys, microbial microcosm experiments, and metagenomic sequencing to evaluate the resistance and resilience of microbial taxonomic and functional biodiversity to...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Environmental Biology, under CFDA Program 47.074 Biological Sciences, is providing $103,398 to Florida International University (FIU) to develop a novel seafloor sensor/sampler system and associated machine learning control systems. The goal is to better understand how tidal pumping and subsurface currents influence seafloor oxygenation and sedimentary carbon cycling. The project will provide mentoring and field...
This $112,704 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), will fund research examining the effects of Hurricane Ian's nutrient and organic matter inputs on coastal waters in southwest Florida. Specifically, the grantee Mote Marine Laboratory Inc. will measure a suite of carbon and nutrient parameters and conduct carbon and nutrient cycling assessments at stations in Charlotte Harbor and the adjacent inner West Florida Shelf system in December 2022, February 2023, and September 2023. This will allow assessment of system responses over timescales ranging from weeks to months to one year post-hurricane. Data collected will also be used in a coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model to understand conditions on the West Florida Shelf and explore how storms of varying intensity may affect the region, identifying tipping points toward persistent hypoxia. Outreach efforts include presentations to K-12 students.
