The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences awarded Vanderbilt University a $625,613 Project Grant entitled "WOU-MMA: Mapping the Host Galaxies of Low-Frequency Gravitational-Wave Sources" under CFDA Program 47.049. The grant will fund a 3-year research project to create a catalog of galaxies that may contain pairs of massive black holes, allowing researchers to better pinpoint the origins of low-frequency gravitational wave signals detected by pulsar timing arrays. The project will train two graduate students in multi-messenger science and result in a student-developed web-based tool to inspect and filter candidate host galaxies for gravitational wave signals from supermassive black hole binary systems. This work aims to advance the multi-messenger discovery of these systems and construct models of the low-frequency stochastic gravitational wave background.
