This $540,758 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Astronomical Sciences supports research at Northwestern University focused on advancing the understanding of star formation, the interstellar medium (ISM), and stellar winds in galaxies with bursty versus steady star formation rates. The key research objectives are to: 1) assess the applicability of equilibrium disk and pressure balance models for the Kennicutt-Schmidt star formation law, 2) examine the dynamical and thermodynamic properties of the ISM and its relationship to the circumgalactic medium, and 3) investigate the launching of galactic winds and galactic fountains in bursty versus steady galaxies. The research approach involves a large suite of zoom-in simulations that model the ISM and stellar feedback processes in individual galaxies within a cosmological context. The award will fund a postdoctoral researcher, support the mentoring of three undergraduate students, enable outreach activities, and support improvements to the Firefly scientific visualization tool. No sub-awards are planned under this NSF grant, which runs from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2026.
