- This $499,624 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at the University of Pittsburgh to develop physics-guided machine learning methods for turbulent flow simulation. Funded under the NSF's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), the three-year award aims to advance computational fluid dynamics capabilities. Specifically, the university researchers will create a new deep learning model incorporating physical constraints to reconstruct...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Program project grant awarded $283,299 to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to develop and validate a novel 3D particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The technique incorporates a single light-field color camera, a high-energy pulsed rainbow illumination beam, and advanced particle and flow reconstruction algorithms to enable high-resolution 3D flow measurements with improved axial resolution. This research aims to...
- This three-year, $326,698 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) supports research at the University of Virginia to develop quantitative three-dimensional, three-component velocimetry techniques for reactive flows. The goal is to address uncertainties in current 3D3C velocity measurement methods and enable their application in reactive environments through three progressive steps. First, novel experiments will directly quantify errors in existing...

The award supports research and development of hierarchical Bayesian methods for advanced inverse problem solving—mathematical techniques designed to estimate unknown causes from observed data while quantifying solution...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $456,872 Project Grant under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to the University of Illinois to conduct research on the role of complex fluids in the flow and instabilities of particle-laden liquids. The project aims to improve the understanding of particle behavior and flow characteristics in complex fluid environments, with applications in areas such as microfluidic devices, inkjet printing, and enhanced oil recovery. The research combines...
- This $220,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) aims to advance the understanding of how soft, deformable particles, such as oil droplets and cells, move through complex environments consisting of narrow constrictions and obstacles. The award to Emory University will systematically investigate the flow of bubbles and droplets through obstacle arrays, studying the effects of particle surface tension, obstacle density, size, and...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Case Western Reserve University received a $149,983 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Division of Mathematical Sciences (CFDA 47.049 – Mathematical and Physical Sciences program) effective August 15, 2025, with completion targeted for July 31, 2027. This award supports fundamental research in asymptotic geometric analysis and affine convex geometry, with particular emphasis on high-dimensional objects and phenomena. The research...
Case Western Reserve University will receive $224,905 from the National Science Foundation under the Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.041) to develop a novel algorithm for particle image velocimetry from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2024. The algorithm aims to significantly advance fluid flow measurement capabilities by allowing researchers to measure velocities in turbulent flows with greater accuracy, resolution, and dynamic range than possible to date using conventional experimental hardware. It will substitute directly for cross-correlation based approaches currently used in state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry processing software. Upon thorough testing and validation, the final algorithm version will be disseminated as widely as possible to fluid dynamics experimenters.
