The University of Missouri System was awarded a three-year $260,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049). The grant funds research into non-perturbative interfacial waves through mathematical modeling and analysis. Specific projects include using global bifurcation theory to prove the existence of overhanging internal gravity waves, characterizing the stability of multimodal internal capillary-gravity solitary waves, constructing exact solutions for atmospheric shockwaves and resonant triads to model meteotsunamis, and analyzing the stability of water waves with submerged hollow vortices. The research aims to advance understanding of nonlinear wave dynamics across physics, engineering and the geosciences. The award also supports research training for undergraduate and graduate students. The period of performance is from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026.
