This $128,740 National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award to Brown University, funded through the NSF Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CBET) (CFDA 47.041 - Engineering), is supporting collaborative research to develop new magnetic particle imaging (MPI) tracer platforms. The key objectives are to create controlled clustering of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles using specialized polymers derived from natural amino acids, in order to manipulate the nanoparticle spatial arrangement and optimize the tracer response for MPI. This interdisciplinary project involves researchers from Brown University, the University of Rhode Island, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and will engage students through partnerships with NSF's Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation programs. The novel tracer design approach is expected to help advance MPI as a non-invasive medical imaging technique for disease diagnosis and treatment.
