Cornell University received a $470,975 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings under the STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) federal grant program (CFDA 47.076). The grant will fund the development of an AI-based conversational agent called Social Media Co-Pilot to enhance teens' digital literacy and cyber safety education. Cornell will employ natural language processing techniques to create a tool that identifies "teachable moments" and offers personalized feedback to reinforce safe online behaviors when teens encounter risks like aggression, privacy violations, phishing and scams on social media. Formative input from racially diverse teens and educators will ensure the tool is relevant, effective and scalable. Cornell will evaluate the project's impact on cyber safety knowledge and outcomes through randomized experimentation. The grant period is from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2026.
