The Pennsylvania State University received a $276,069 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the federal STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop an AI-based conversational agent called Social Media Co-Pilot. The goal is to use this tool to educate teens on responsible and ethical online conduct through personalized feedback and guidance within an interactive social media learning environment. Penn State will employ natural language processing techniques to design Co-Pilot to identify "teachable moments" and offer advice discouraging risky behaviors across common online risks like aggression, privacy violations, phishing and scams. The university will refine Co-Pilot iteratively with diverse teen and educator input and evaluate its impact on cybersecurity knowledge and behaviors through randomized experimentation. This work aims to advance AI-assisted experiential learning methods in education and further understanding of human-centered AI design tailored for student populations.
