A data-focused visual block-based programming toolkit will be created for students to manipulate...
New York University was awarded a $374,400 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.070) to support the development of curricular resources and tools to advance middle school students' critical data literacy skills. Over the three-year period from July 2023 to June 2026, New York University will collaborate with 10 teachers across four schools to co-design curricula and remixing tools that leverage students' digital media practices to strengthen argumentation abilities and critical investigation of sociopolitical issues using multiple data sources. Up to 30 additional teachers and 1,300 students nationwide will participate in classroom implementations to provide iterative feedback used to refine the technology and curriculum. The project aims to answer research questions around which remixing features best facilitate critical data reasoning, how to support diverse implementation contexts, and the impacts on students' data literacy competencies. Findings will contribute understanding of how interdisciplinary learning goals across argumentation and communication can be unified through technology to advance critical data analysis skills.
