This $575,000 National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry Project Grant supports the development of new methods for the chemical synthesis of cyclic organic molecules at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2026. Professor Rick L. Danheiser will study new cycloaddition and annulation strategies to provide researchers in academia and industry with more efficient tools for synthesizing medically, agriculturally and industrially important compounds containing carbocyclic and heterocyclic ring systems. Graduate students funded through this award will also coordinate MIT's outreach program presenting chemistry and STEM careers to approximately 1,200-1,500 high school students annually, including those from underrepresented groups. This award falls under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to advance scientific knowledge and understanding in support of national priorities.
