The National Science Foundation awarded a $495,964 project grant to Saint Louis University under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049). The grant will fund research into developing a conceptual framework for the rare dual-release photochemistry of sulfoximes and sulfondiimines. Professor Ryan McCulla of Saint Louis University's Department of Chemistry will investigate the photochemistry of these compounds, which can release two different reactive intermediates when irradiated with light. The goal is to establish general principles governing the sequence of photo-release and determine how properties like bond dissociation energies and excited state characteristics impact the order of release. The research also aims to test if the proposed framework can predict sequence of release for sulfondiimines. The grant will support this research from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026. In addition, the funding will provide summer research opportunities and career exploration events for high school students from underrepresented groups.
