The National Science Foundation awarded a 4-year, $575,000 Project Grant to Professor Babak Borhan at Michigan State University (MSU) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program. The project focuses on developing new methodologies to rapidly identify the chirality (three-dimensional shape) of organic molecules, which is critical for understanding their physical and biological characteristics. Key objectives include designing and synthesizing supramolecular sensor assemblies to detect molecular structural asymmetry using circular dichroism, with applications in asymmetric catalysis. Additionally, the project will continue MSU's long-standing summer research program for high school students from financially disadvantaged families. This award reflects NSF's mission to advance scientific understanding and support research that addresses important challenges.
