The Regents of the University of California, doing business as University of California, Berkeley, received a $273,044 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (47.049) federal grant program.
The award will support the development of a comprehensive multi-scale, multi-physics mathematical and computational model of cell encapsulation for bioartificial organ design over a three year period from May 15, 2023 through April 30, 2026. Specifically, UC Berkeley will develop coupled fluid-structure interaction and advection-reaction-diffusion models to analyze oxygen transport and cell viability within hydrogel-based cell encapsulation structures. Smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations and neural networks will be used to incorporate microscale hydrogel architecture data into the macroscale models. Outcomes will advance knowledge of mathematical fluid-structure interaction involving poroelastic media and coupled nonlinear systems on moving domains. Validation experiments will be conducted at UC San Francisco's Biodigital Design Laboratory. Broader impacts include undergraduate and graduate student training and outreach activities to promote women in STEM fields. Subawards will support related research at Texas Tech University.
