The research aims to improve understanding of how amplified Arctic warming may influence extreme weather patterns in midlatitudes, as supported by the NSF Polar Programs CFDA #47.078. This program seeks to strengthen polar research and understanding through basic science best...
- This four-year, $565,121 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078), will fund collaborative research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to improve understanding of outlet glacier dynamics in Greenland. The researchers will combine new field observations at a large marine-terminating outlet glacier with satellite data analysis and numerical modeling to disentangle the relative influence of...
- This $1,237,840 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under CFDA Program 47.078, will fund research by the University of Colorado to quantify climate variability and extremes over the past 100,000 years. The research team will use high-resolution measurements from ancient polar ice cores to statistically analyze changes in climate variability and the frequency of extreme events as the Earth's average climate has fluctuated over...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded a $1.89 million Project Grant to The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York to support the collaborative research project "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: GRATE - INTEGRATING DATA AND MODELING TO QUANTIFY RATES OF GREENLAND ICE SHEET CHANGE, HOLOCENE TO FUTURE" from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2025. This award will fund research under the official federal grant program titled "Polar...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $1,170,034 Project Grant under the Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) to the University of Maine System to quantify the biogeochemical cycles and forecast future scenarios for sub-Arctic agroecosystems from Alaska to Greenland. The 3-year project, beginning January 1, 2026, will investigate the impacts of expanding agricultural practices on Arctic and sub-Arctic freshwater systems and ecosystems. The researchers will partner with 6 farms in South...
- The University of Montana was awarded a $1,199,063 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs to conduct collaborative research on observing the transformation of the Greenland ice sheet firn layer. The grant was awarded on November 1, 2021 with a completion date of October 31, 2026. Under the NSF's Polar Programs, which aims to expand fundamental knowledge of polar regions through basic research best conducted in or related to the Arctic and Antarctic (CFDA...
- Atmospheric & Environmental Research Inc. was awarded a $420,401 project grant from the National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities to conduct research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: NNA RESEARCH: GLOBAL CHANGES, LOCAL IMPACTS: STUDY OF GLACIAL FJORDS, ECOSYSTEMS AND COMMUNITIES IN GREENLAND" from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026. The research is being conducted under the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research in the...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded a $990,272 project grant to The Trustees of Columbia University in New York City to support research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: GRATE - INTEGRATING DATA AND MODELING TO QUANTIFY RATES OF GREENLAND ICE SHEET CHANGE, HOLOCENE TO FUTURE." The period of performance for this research is from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2025. The research aims to strengthen understanding of the Greenland Ice Sheet and its response to...
- This $700,962 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will fund a collaborative research study on how meltwater from surface channels affects the subglacial drainage system beneath Greenland's glaciers. The investigators will conduct a field study using seismic sensors, radar, and ice movement measurements to track the evolution of underground drainage cavities and how their connectivity impacts seasonal changes in ice velocity. The research builds...
The University of Alaska Fairbanks received a three-year, $585,834 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs to conduct collaborative research on atmospheric controls of moisture extremes over Greenland. The grant was awarded under the Polar Programs program (CFDA 47.078), which supports basic research best conducted in or related to the polar regions. Through statistical analyses of historical atmospheric data and climate model experiments using CESM versions 1 and 2 and CMIP6 model output, the research team will test the hypothesis that low frequency, high-latitude circulation variability influences weather to seasonal time scale moisture patterns over Greenland. The project aims to identify natural and anthropogenic forcings associated with local ocean-atmosphere processes that most influence Greenland's summer circulation variability and air temperature and moisture on interannual to interdecadal timescales. Outcomes will include online visualizations of Greenland hydroclimate processes and an expert workshop to advance understanding of atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere interactions in the region.
