Professor David Reichman of Columbia University was awarded a $530,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop theoretical methods for simulating novel strongly interacting materials with technological applications. Over a three-year period from May 2023 through April 2026, Reichman and his research group will use machine learning techniques and quantum computing algorithms to model how coupling to optical cavities can influence chemical reactions and transport in materials. They will also extend auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo methods and develop approaches for treating strongly coupled electron-phonon systems, with a focus on polarons and exciton binding renormalization in polar semiconductors. Outreach to local schools is also included to teach about solar cell operation.
