The Smithsonian Institution received a $824,455 project grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074). The award will fund a collaborative research project to study Borneo's role in driving biodiversity in Southeast Asia through potential areas of endemism on the island. Field expeditions will collect small mammal specimens from six locations in northern Borneo to augment existing museum collections. Researchers will sequence hundreds of nuclear genes and complete mitochondrial genomes from specimens to generate phylogenies and statistically analyze genomic patterns of diversity. The project aims to test the hypothesis that Borneo significantly contributed species to the region. It will provide training to Indonesian, Malaysian and U.S. colleagues and graduate students. Findings are expected to yield new species discoveries, taxonomic revisions, and preserved voucher specimens with high-quality tissues for museums. The award period is from June 15, 2023 through May 31, 2027.
