The University of North Dakota received a $216,546 National Science Foundation project grant under the Biological Sciences (47.074) federal grant program to support a Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site award from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2026. The grant will fund research training for 36 undergraduate students, primarily from rural and tribal colleges, over the summers of 2023 through 2025. Students will conduct biological research projects related to genes and the environment through a hybrid remote model, working either at the University of North Dakota or their home institutions. Research topics span various fields including cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, molecular biology, neuroscience, and systems biology. In addition to hands-on research, students will participate in seminars on scientific writing, ethics, diversity and inclusion, and applying to graduate programs to support their professional development. Assessment and tracking will help determine the career outcomes for participants. The training program aims to strengthen science education and research capacity in rural and tribal communities.
