This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $470,681 will fund research at Texas Tech University from September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2028 under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The research aims to develop a computational framework called BMI-FRAME to model brain-muscle interaction dynamics and responses to mechanical impacts like traumatic brain injury. The framework will integrate multiscale brain neuronal models, finite-element head-neck structures, proportional-integral-derivative control algorithms, and neural network agents. The research seeks to understand brain neuronal response to subtraumatic impacts, identify neural networks to predict brain and muscle parameter tuning, and characterize dynamics between brain and muscle function under mechanical stresses. Findings aim to create new knowledge on how impacts disrupt brain electro-mechanical signaling and affect muscle response, with the long-term goal of developing technologies and therapies to reduce brain injury.
