The National Science Foundation awarded a $260,919 project grant under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.070) to the University of Puerto Rico Research and Development Center Division (UPR R&D) for a collaborative research project from May 2023 to April 2026. The grant aims to develop an enhanced open networked airborne computing platform to facilitate design, implementation, and testing of airborne computing systems integrating control, computing, communication, and networking capabilities. UPR R&D will provide community support through regional testbed access sites and technical services. The platform enhancements include updated hardware/middleware for distributed control, enhanced communication and networking using software-defined radio and networking, new airborne computing services for tasks like target recognition and lidar data processing, and integrated security features like a secure federated learning platform. The project partners with other minority-serving institutions to engage underrepresented groups and disseminate results through workshops, competitions and other outreach.
