This $100,001 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), supports the University of South Carolina in developing a methodology for software-driven sustainability. Over the one-year period from September 2022 to August 2023, the University will conduct an empirical study of sustainability challenges in emerging software domains like cyber-physical systems and IoT. Based on findings, it will define sustainability as a set of quality attributes, scenarios, and metrics for software. It will then create a catalog of design strategies and patterns to help developers explicitly address sustainability in their work. The project also aims to establish an interdisciplinary community around sustainability research in software engineering. If successful, this work will lay the groundwork for new techniques and methodologies enabling more sustainable computing.
