Project Grant 2233726
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $105,745 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to Williams College to conduct a collaborative research study on exploring early metazoan reef evolution through a multi-scale approach. The researchers will utilize various methods, including drone-derived models, 3D reconstructions, and isotopic analyses, to improve understanding of the inhabitants and ecology of the nearly one billion-year-old Little Dal reefs in northwestern...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences totals $656,580 to support research investigating the role of microbialites in Lower-Middle Ordovician reefs of Laurentia. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), the award will strengthen fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system through basic research in the atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Specifically, the grant will fund quantification of framework builders in Early-Middle...
- This Project Grant award of $143,870 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research project at Lycoming College to study the late Devonian period, approximately 360 million years ago. The project aims to examine the links between environmental extremes, such as glaciation, and vertebrate habitats during this time period by collecting and analyzing data from rock and fossil samples. The research will advance the understanding of...
- This $918,053 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) supports fundamental and applied research to document and characterize the diverse communities of marine epizoic diatoms living on endangered marine megafauna. The overall project objectives are to: 1) describe and formally document up to 50 new species of epizoic diatoms; 2) reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of these diatoms to understand their evolution and...
- This Project Grant award of $351,696 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research to investigate the drivers of a disease affecting the long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum in the Caribbean. The research aims to unravel the interactions between the pathogenic ciliate causing the disease, environmental conditions, and the urchin's microbiome to better understand disease progression and impacts. The project includes field...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $271,558 to Rowan University supports collaborative research investigating the environmental and paleobiological effects of an extreme cold climate period at the end of the Devonian period, approximately 360 million years ago. The research team will collect and analyze data from rock and fossil samples to test the link between environmental extremes and vertebrate habitats during this time. This...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences awarded a $202,138 Project Grant to the University of Washington under the Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) program. The grant funds a collaborative research project to examine the evolution of North American small mammal communities in response to landscape changes over the past 30 to 5 million years. The researchers will collect fossils and sediment samples from the U.S. Great Plains and Northwest to study how changes in habitat...
- This $471,604 National Science Foundation project grant will fund research into the origin and expansion of silica biomineralization and its influence on the global silica cycle from 520-440 million years ago. The Regents of the University of Colorado will conduct stable isotope analysis of silicon in the oldest fossils of sponges and radiolarians from western United States geological sites. Researchers will evaluate isotope preservation and build an improved Cambrian-Ordovician silica isotope...
- This Project Grant award of $411,079 from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) supports a collaborative research project to investigate how the availability of marine nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate may have fueled the expansion and ecological roles of eukaryotic organisms during the Tonian period (1000-720 million years ago). The project, led by researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), involves a multi-institutional team...
- This Project Grant award for $380,162 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research project led by the University of South Florida (USF) to investigate the environmental drivers and disease progression of Diadematidae scuticociliatosis, a deadly pathogen affecting the long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum. The project aims to enhance understanding of how the disease, environmental conditions, and urchin microbiomes interact to...
This Project Grant award of $390,694 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research to explore the ecology and morphology of the Little Dal reef system in northwestern Canada, which contains some of the earliest purported remains of sponges on Earth. The researchers from the University of Washington and Dartmouth College will utilize a multidisciplinary and multiscale approach, including drone-derived models, 3D fossil reconstructions, and isotopic analyses, to determine whether the vermiform microstructures found in the reefs unambiguously represent the remains of a sponge-grade organism, as well as to quantify the micro- to macro-scale characteristics of the reef system. This work aims to enhance our understanding of the tempo and mode of early metazoan evolution and the transition from microbial to metazoan framework reefs. The research will involve training undergraduate and graduate students, including a student from the local Sahtu/Dene communities, in this collaborative and interdisciplinary scientific endeavor.
