Project Grant 2232970
- This $195,036 two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research analyzing paleomagnetic data from sediment and basalt core samples extracted during the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 391. A team of researchers led by The Leland Stanford Junior University will study samples cored from the Walvis Ridge in the South Atlantic Ocean to develop a paleolatitude record for Late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic volcanoes...
- This $109,216 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences (CFDA 47.050 Geosciences) supports a collaborative research effort to investigate the evolution of the Tristan-Gough-Walvis Ridge hotspot system in the South Atlantic. The project aims to better understand the role of hotspots in continental rifting and ocean basin formation by analyzing geochemical and geochronological data from basaltic core samples collected during IODP Expeditions 391 and...
- This $123,726 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research initiative to investigate mantle source reservoirs and Cretaceous plate motions in the Pacific Ocean. The project aims to better understand the timing and drivers of global plate reorganization events during the mid-Cretaceous period. Led by Oregon State University, the work involves a 31-day seagoing expedition to dredge seamounts, ridges, and rises in the...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $195,944 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Tennessee (UT) to conduct collaborative research on the evolution of the Tristan-Gough-Walvis Ridge hotspot system in the South Atlantic Ocean. The project will investigate the changing magmatic processes and interactions between the hotspot and overlying lithosphere during continental rifting and seafloor spreading through geochemical and geochronological...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program grant (CFDA 47.050) awarded $173,646 to Utah State University (USU) on July 15, 2023 to conduct collaborative research on the evolution of the Tristan-Gough-Walvis Ridge hotspot system in the South Atlantic Ocean. The research team will investigate the contributions of the upper mantle to Walvis Ridge volcanism, the factors determining the proportions of upper mantle versus hotspot contributions, and how the upper mantle changes as...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $173,129 to Oregon State University to conduct collaborative research investigating mantle source reservoirs and Cretaceous plate motions recorded by ancient mid-Pacific oceanic rises and seamount tracks. The project aims to better understand the timing and drivers of global-scale plate reorganization events that occurred during the mid-Cretaceous period (120-80 million years ago). The...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $149,832 collaborative research project grant to the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD). The 3-year project will reconstruct ancient magma compositions to evaluate petrologic proxies for changes in crustal thickness over time at four sites in the western U.S. The research team will collect data and create field research videos to showcase their findings and raise awareness about geoscience research. The project...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences Project Grant award of $202,781 to Towson University is focused on understanding the evolution of the Tristan-Gough-Walvis Ridge hotspot system. Through collaborative research with national and international scientists, the project will investigate the contributions of the upper mantle versus the hotspot to the Walvis Ridge volcanism, and how the upper mantle changes as continental rifting and ocean basin formation progressed in...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) project grant award to the University of Texas at Austin provides $175,290 over 3 years starting November 1, 2024 to conduct a novel 2D/3D seismic experiment investigating the early stages of seafloor spreading in the Atlantic Ocean. The project aims to shed light on the anomalous geology and mantle dynamics that occurred during the first 50 million years after the breakup of the Pangea supercontinent and the formation of...
- The University of Wisconsin-Madison received a $140,175 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research titled "Early Evolution of the Hawaiian Plume from the Geochemistry and Geochronology of Basalt Spanning the Entire Emperor Seamount Chain." The research, to be completed by December 2024, will analyze basalt samples along the Emperor Seamount volcanic chain to better understand the early evolution of the...
This two-year, $388,669 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), will fund research analyzing sediment and basalt core samples from the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 391. The University of Houston will collaborate to study the paleolatitude record of Walvis Ridge hotspot volcanoes in the late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic eras. Researchers will produce a paleolatitude timeline for comparison with records from the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, to test hypotheses involving true polar wander and combined effects of mantle plume motion and flow. The project also supports three early career investigators. Findings will further understanding of hotspot geodynamics and mantle structure.
