This two-year, $500,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), will support Duke University in developing the Flexible Affordable Scalable Technology for Research Storage system. Commonly known as FAST, this shared research storage system utilizes commodity data center hardware and open source Ceph software to provide flexible, high-performance, and cost-effective tiered data storage capabilities to meet research data storage needs. FAST provides both network attached storage and object storage models with guidance on appropriate usage, and includes scripts to package, migrate, and facilitate access to data across storage tiers. Twenty percent of the FAST system and its robust storage services will be shared with the broader research community via the Open Science Data Federation as well as with minority-serving institutions in North Carolina through a community storage grant program. The overall goal is to reduce the time, effort and money researchers spend managing and ensuring long-term access to their data through optimized storage based on requirements.
