The University of Washington will receive $500,000 from the National Science Foundation under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering federal grant program to develop a novel central data storage, curation, and sharing platform. This two-year project grant will support the creation of a scalable, elastic, low-latency data storage framework to enable interdisciplinary big data research across materials science, particle physics, environmental science, medicine, and health disciplines. The University will deploy 9.6PB of new usable storage infrastructure accessible across its Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma campuses. This cyberinfrastructure aims to advance high-throughput data analytics, encourage collaborative research through common data access, and support convergent science by bringing together different fields. The funding will also develop a range of data science training programs and support related education and research at minority-serving institutions to prepare more diverse data leadership and inspire enthusiasm for big data sciences broadly.
