The National Science Foundation Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems awarded North Carolina State University a $1,499,908 Project Grant under the Engineering (47.041) federal grant program. The grant will fund the development of reconfigurable metal-free microsystems with alternative power sources from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2026. Specifically, the university will investigate carbon-based electronic materials, low-power circuits, and bio-derived alternative power sources to engineer biodegradable sensing-communication nodes for monitoring environmental conditions. Florida International University will receive a sub-award to develop fabrication protocols for organic and carbon electronic circuit building blocks on biodegradable substrates. The overarching goal is to enable sustainable electronics for the Internet of Things through novel materials, circuits and enzymatic fuel cells that can operate on glucose and lactate to power metal-free devices.
