This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $224,954 will fund research to measure daily ionospheric variability and solar eclipse impacts using amateur radio HF Doppler shift receivers. Over the two-year period from January 2023 to December 2025, the awardee Case Western Reserve University will collaborate with the Hamsci amateur radio community on a project called CEDAR. Thirty Hamsci GRAPE receivers will be deployed across North America to study ionospheric responses to dawn, dusk, and the solar eclipses of 2023 and 2024. The receivers will generate observations to answer scientific questions about how ionospheric variability varies with location and other factors during daily terminator passages and eclipses. This project supports the Geosciences program's goal of expanding fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system through basic research in atmospheric and space sciences.
