This $2,495,019 project grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), will support the development and deployment of a smart, cloud-connected electrochemical sensor network to monitor drinking water quality in several socioeconomically diverse Massachusetts communities. The University of Massachusetts Lowell will work with community stakeholders and sub-awardees Loyola University Chicago, the Young Women's Christian Association of Lowell, and Groundwork Lawrence, Inc. to install citizen-operated sensors; design a mobile app and data platform; and foster collaboration, education, and advocacy. The sensor network and analytics platform are intended to enable real-time contaminant detection and early warning where traditional monitoring may be infrequent. The project also aims to build social cohesion, increase water testing literacy, and empower communities to advocate for infrastructure improvements. The work will advance scientific understanding of technologies, relationships, and policies needed for a sustainable, scalable water quality monitoring system. The four-year project period extends from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2026.
