This $100,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program will support the development of a transmission electron microscope specimen holder for imaging quantum matter and other extreme low-temperature applications at the University of Michigan. The specimen holder aims to enable atomic resolution imaging of materials at or near their operating temperatures, including quantum devices and materials used in quantum computing, magnets, superconductors, batteries, and other next-generation technologies. Existing technological attempts at low-temperature imaging have been unable to provide stable imaging due to excessive vibrations from traditional cooling methods. This project seeks to overcome space constraints within electron microscopes and reduce vibration to allow stable atomic imaging through new specimen holder designs. Outcomes will include evaluation of the commercial potential of atomic resolution low-temperature electron microscopy for the quantum device, semiconductor, chemical, biological, and soft materials industries.
