The New Jersey Institute of Technology received a $100,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation to develop a vacuum distillation technology for extracting condensable liquids from wastewater. Under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084), NJIT will conduct an I-Corps project to further the core innovation of using spray flash vaporization with active-vacuum extraction. This membrane-free process could allow for an intensified vaporization in a compact system without surfaces that typically scale or block. If successful, the novel distillation technique has the potential for significant volume reduction and concentration of wastewater, recycling of gases like methane, and a design that is low-cost, scalable, and suitable for isolated areas. The award was issued on June 15, 2022 with a completion date of December 31, 2022.
