This $100,000 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of improved bicycle helmets for children through additive manufacturing techniques at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from June 2022 to May 2023. Specifically, the award aims to reduce head injuries in children through 3D scanning, surface generation, and mesoscale design analysis to create custom-fitted helmets using thermoplastic mesoscale structures additively manufactured with comparable or improved impact resistance over traditional foam designs. In addition to increased safety and compliance through personalized sizing, this work under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program may establish new product development methods for personal protective equipment with applications across industries requiring head protection.
