This two-year, $150,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program will fund research exploring phase stability and related deformation mechanisms in refractory high-entropy alloys. Specifically, the University of Tennessee will investigate precursors to phase transformations, such as structure-induced local lattice distortions and chemical short-range ordering, in disordered multi-principal component alloys. The research aims to determine the effects of chemical complexity and lattice distortions on phase stability and properties. It will also further develop cepstrum-based analysis of electron diffraction patterns to correlate findings with alloy synthesis and characterization efforts. Outreach activities will broaden participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Results seek to enable design of new refractory alloys with applications in elevated-temperature environments.
