This $390,000 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at Georgetown University to develop novel high entropy alloy phases with strong magnetic anisotropy for potential application as magnetic recording media. Funded under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), the three-year award will employ an iterative high-throughput approach combining combinatorial thin film synthesis, characterization, simulation and machine learning to efficiently survey the vast compositional parameter space of high entropy alloys. Researchers will synthesize thin film compositions, characterize crystal structures and magnetic properties through techniques such as x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and magnetometry. Machine learning will aid the design and optimization process to identify promising alloy compositions and microstructures for magnetic recording performance. The project aims to demonstrate an experimentally derived prototype recording medium, while also generating a large publicly available database on high entropy alloys to support continued research and education in this area.
