This National Science Foundation project grant award of $291,659 provides funding through August 2024 to implement an experiential learning STEM opportunity pilot program at Dona Ana Community College in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The award is made under the federal STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to enhance undergraduate STEM education and broaden participation in STEM fields at Hispanic-serving institutions.
Specifically, the award will support implementing teaching practices to improve mathematics student self-efficacy and engagement in undergraduate research to strengthen mathematical and science identities and retention in STEM career pathways. Outcomes include improving student perceptions and sense of belonging in STEM, retention in STEM programs upon transfer, and developing a model for implementing the program at other community colleges. The project addresses underrepresentation of Hispanics in STEM and the national shortage of STEM professionals. New Mexico State University, which operates Dona Ana Community College, receives the award as the prime recipient on September 1, 2022.
