This $600,000 two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program will support the development of a first-of-its-kind open-source measurement infrastructure platform. The University of Chicago will design, develop, and deploy this platform to enable new classes of research on digital infrastructure access across U.S. populations. Specifically, the platform aims to facilitate studies on the national digital divide challenge by shifting internet measurement away from convenience samples limited to specific networks or locations. Toward this end, the project has already achieved early successes in a pilot deployment in Chicago and will now design the platform for incremental, scalable deployments nationally and globally. The outcomes could profoundly catalyze new areas of internet measurement and networking research with broader societal relevance beyond technology alone, including questions of importance to economics, policy, and the social sciences.
