This $551,343 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) will support the development of inclusive robotics and artificial intelligence technologies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the construction industry. The University of Texas at San Antonio will lead an interdisciplinary team to: 1) Develop an adaptive robot teleoperation interface considering gender diversity and experience levels to augment worker performance; 2) Design a federated learning system to aggregate limited data from underrepresented workers and mitigate bias; and 3) Develop a blockchain-based platform to certify worker skills and performance for equitable recruitment and retention. The team will also measure the technological, economic, social, and legal impacts of these technologies on construction work and develop an integrated platform for inclusive workforce training and networking. The project aims to help more women and minorities participate in and advance within the construction industry as it increasingly incorporates robotics and AI.
